Happy 80th, Maurice Sendak!

by lenona321@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Jun 10, 2008 at 11:32 AM

In 1970, he won the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration,
and so far, he is the only American to do so.

He lives in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

"Let the Wild Rumpus Start! "Sendak on Sendak" at the Rosenbach
Museum" (Philadelphia)
First paragraph:
Maurice Sendak once received a letter from an 8-year-old asking, "How
much does it cost to get to where the wild things are? If it's not
expensive, my sister and I would like to spend the summer there."

(There's fascinating, grim stuff about his childhood in the article -
as well as why he relates to Carroll's Alice Liddell.)

More on the museum exhibit.
Excerpt:
In one amusing clip discussing William Blake, Sendak describes the
19th-century British poet as ''a flaming maniac,'' adding that is
''the best compliment'' he could give an artist.

 Even more!
"A Rosenbach retrospective re-creates Maurice Sendak's view of
childhood - before adults took it over."

(About the debate over "Where the Wild Things Are" and the upcoming
movie.)

I met him five years ago at M.I.T. He had Beatrix Potter's walking
stick with him - though he certainly didn't look old enough to be
using it!

In 1993, he and Art Spiegelman did a cartoon piece for the New Yorker,
as well as the cover. (That was soon after the release of "We Are All
in the Dumps With Jack & Guy.") The cartoon Sendak did most of the
talking in the piece.
